Self Care for Loved Ones of Alcoholics and Addicts

Taking care of yourself doesn’t take anything away from the alcoholic or addict in your life. If anything, keeping yourself healthy in body, mind and soul makes you a better partner. But don’t do it for them, do it for you. Loved ones often adapt to the alcoholic’s needs, putting themselves second. Please don’t. It’s important to address your needs — whether that’s making time for therapy sessions, Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meetings, pursuing a passion, going for a run, a night out with a friend or time to yourself.
In my book, Bottles in the Basement: Surviving an Alcoholic, you’ll see that I tried to keep up with family and friends even when my husband was isolating in the basement. It’s so easy to get sucked into the alcoholic’s world. Make yourself a priority.
Loved ones of alcoholics and addicts: You matter!
